The Film
I won’t dwell on this section long as there are already reviews aplenty of Alejandro Inarritu’s Oscar-winning epic. Briefly, though, it takes its inspiration from an incredible true(ish) 19th century tale of survival in the harsh American wilderness, and is one of the most beautifully shot, mesmerizingly atmospheric, but also unflinchingly brutal movies ever made.
To see it once is never to forget it - though actually it’s also one of the few films in recent years that not only rewards repeat viewings but can become genuinely addictive. Which makes it, of course, exactly the sort of film a movie fan is more likely to buy on physical media like Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. This, though, turns out to be far from the only reason why you should buy it on Ultra HD Blu-ray rather than just streaming it.

Picture quality
For a film based on people who often seem to be covered in more dirt and blood than skin, The Revenant truly is a spectacularly gorgeous film. And the Ultra HD Blu-ray version delivers every unflinching detail, every dazzling color, and every exquisite play of light with a degree of mesmerizing accuracy the home entertainment world has simply never seen before.
Let’s look first at the amount of detail in the picture. I’ve seen some discussions of Ultra HD Blu-ray that question whether having four times as much resolution as you get with a normal HD Blu-ray really makes much difference - and to be fair there are Ultra HD Blu-ray titles out there where the resolution benefit feels disappointingly marginal. I find it hard to imagine, though, that anyone could watch The Revenant on Ultra HD Blu-ray without feeling acutely aware of the boost in picture quality 4K/UHD delivers over and above normal HD Blu-ray.
There’s clearly more detail to be seen in pretty much every part of every shot. Distant rocky outcrops contain more ledges and ridges, woodland contains more individual leaf and branch detailing, faces look as pored and blemished as if you were standing there just inches from a real person, every strand of hair and fur is stunningly defined, and so on and so forth.
Detail isn't just about detail
It’s not just in the raw details that Ultra HD Blu-ray’s extra resolution is felt, though. Comparing it with the normal Blu-ray Fox helpfully provides alongside the UHD one also reveals a greater sense of depth in the 4K image, thanks to the way the image retains detail further into the background.
The all-round extra definition brings a greater sense of solidity to all the objects in the image too, resulting in a more three-dimensional sense of space ideally suited to the often epic scale of The Revenant’s settings. Everything feels so immediate and tangible that you feel like you could reach right out and touch it.
Much of The Revenant was shot digitally on the ALEXA 65 camera in native 4K resolution, and the advantages of having such a pristine master format to work with (including there being no video noise to break your connection with the action) when creating an Ultra HD Blu-ray are there for all to see.
Just to be clear, moreover, the resolution advantages I’m describing were visible on the 65-inch Samsung TV when I was watching from a perfectly normal viewing distance; I didn’t have to have my nose pressed up to the screen as some 4K cynics might expect.
Even if I upscaled the HD Blu-ray to UHD using either the Panasonic UB900 or Samsung UN65JS9500’s upscaling, the results looked markedly softer and blurrier than the true native UHD glory of the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc.
Turning next to the high dynamic range (explained here) part of The Revenant’s jaw-dropping Ultra HD Blu-ray experience, the advantages over the Blu-ray version of the film are even more defined. In fact, the difference is so night and day that going back to non-HDR material after watching The Revenant in HDR feels almost depressing. It’s like someone’s turned half the TV’s lights off, leaving the resulting images in some sort of perpetual twilight.
The Revenant is shot using almost completely natural light, which cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki wanted to capture with as high a dynamic range as it’s currently possible to get from digital cameras. And being able to see so much more of this natural dynamic range on your TV thanks to HDR than you possibly could with a standard dynamic range (SDR) source and screen makes for a simply breathtaking experience.
Peaks of light like the sun peering through clouds, flames and sparks rising into the night sky and light reflecting off the top of running water enjoy an intensity and pop far beyond anything possible with standard dynamic range video, while the film’s night time scenes are able to combine deep blackness with infinitely subtle greyscale information, shadowy detailing and subtle color delineations in a way that old Blu-rays can’t remotely express.
Extra color
All this and I haven’t even mentioned the impact of the wider color performance you get with The Revenant’s Ultra HD Blu-ray version. I guess The Revenant isn’t actually the most intensely colored film; it’s certainly no Lego Movie, for instance. But that doesn’t stop you feeling in pretty much every frame the impact of the extra color information the Ultra HD Blu-ray master contains.
Sometimes it’s there in the breathtaking intensity of a sunset, flame or sudden spurt of blood; sometimes it’s there in the tiny color tone shifts on a character’s face; sometimes it’s there in the way you can see different shades even in the most intensely bright patches of sunlight; sometimes it’s just there in the delicate drifting grey and white hues of the clouds our hero so often finds himself staring bleakly into. But however it’s expressed, the extra color information always makes its presence felt, lending a whole new level of naturalism and realism to the images that transports you into the film’s world to a degree I’ve never experienced before outside of a top-spec commercial cinema.
The Revenant is nothing if not beautiful. (Pic: 20th Century Fox)
Actually, when all’s said and done this sense of realism is what makes the Ultra HD Blu-ray of The Revenant so special. It turns the image from a picture you’re watching on a television into a real world you’re watching through a window. Notorious big albums free download.
Sound Quality
You might think that a film set in such a barren and natural landscape as The Revenant wouldn’t have a particularly exciting soundtrack. Actually, though, while the DTS-HD 7.1 mix might not have the huge dynamics of, say, a Marvel blockbuster, it does an almost uncanny job of subtly creating the sense of space and nature around you.
Little tricks like background wind noise, creaking trees and almost subliminal shifts in the underlying tone of each scene prove remarkably effective at further building the sense that you’re there in the wilderness with the film’s protagonists.
What’s more, the contrast between the soundtrack’s usually subtle delights and the moments when things - often quite suddenly - kick off can be brutal to a degree that’s perfectly suited to the film.
So effective and evocative is The Revenant’s audio, in fact, that I couldn’t help but think it would have been nice if there was a Dolby Atmos mix available to introduce a sense of height to the sound ‘landscape’.
One last point to add here is that the Ultra HD Blu-ray mix is the same as the one you get on the Blu-ray, so it’s only with its stellar visuals where The Revenant truly makes the new disc format count.

Verdict
If there were ever any doubts as to whether the AV world really needed another disc-based video format, the Ultra HD Blu-ray release of The Revenant lays them to rest in spectacular fashion.
I’ve seen nothing from the streaming and even broadcast worlds so far to suggest that they’re capable of delivering anything like the consistently jaw-dropping imagery contained on this truly beautiful Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Once you’ve seen The Revenant played from Ultra HD Blu-ray on a good quality HDR/4K TV pretty much everything else just looks soul-sappingly drab and mushy by comparison. And if that isn’t the definition of a game-changing moment in home entertainment, I don’t know what is.
